Security Guard (G) Training

Since August 2011, MSTA has been offering the State of California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) required initial Forty (40) hours Power to Arrest Training Course and issuing ‘Certificate of Training’ to each Applicant, upon successful completion. The training is offered in three stages as outlined below, and the training is administered by BSIS Licensed Power to Arrest Trainers and Firearm Instructors.

The Training and License Processing Fees:

  • Forty (40) hours Power to Arrest Training Fee is $400.
  • Live Scan Fingerprints Processing Fee is $76.
  • License (Guard Card) Processing Fee paid directly to BSIS is $55.

The Stages:

Module A

  • 4 hours of Power To Arrest.
  • 4 hours Weapons of Mass Destruction and Terrorism Awareness.

The topics included, but are not limited to:

  1. Definition of arrest, implications to the subject, the guard and the company.
  2. Nature of terrorism, terrorism Patrol techniques, coordinating and sharing of critical information, and security officer role.

Module B

  • 4-hour, Public Relations (Community & Customer).
  • 4-hour, Observation & Documentation (Incident & Daily Activity Reports Writing).
  • 4-hour, Communication and Its Significance.
  • 4-hour, Liability/Legal Aspects.

The topics included, but are not limited to:

  1. Recognizing gender & harassment & discrimination, respect, verbal skills /crisis intervention, diversity, substance abuse & mental illness, ethics and professionalism.

  2. Report writing, English as a second language, observation and patrol techniques, asking appropriate questions, observing suspects and suspicious activity.

  3. Internal – protocols pursuant to contract (who to contact), 2-way radio and monitoring equipment and other technology, External – emergency/first responders, medical personnel, police/sheriff /other enforcement, city services and government services.

  4. Personal/civil/employer, criminal/civil/ administrative, BSIS Code & Regulations, and role of a security guard.

Module C:

  • 4-hour, Officer Safety.
  • 4-hour, Arrest, Search and Seizure.
  • 4-hour, Work Place Violence.
  • 4-hour, Handling Difficult People.

The topics included, but are not limited to:

  1. Threat assessment, subject contact, safety awareness, blood born pathogens, environmental /hazardous materials.
  2. PC 836 / PC 837 and the difference, US Constitution and Amendment Impacting guard responsibilities, loss prevention, merchant law, use of force / handcuff.
  3. Detecting unusual behavior /warning signs, anger management, valuing diversity, personal security, reporting.
  4. Communications, conflict management, speaking constructively, negotiating, verbal diffusion.
